David stepped closer to the monitor with the smug confidence of a man who believed reality itself was on his side.

“What exactly am I supposed to be looking at?” he asked.

Dr. Harris did not answer immediately.

She pressed a few buttons on the machine, freezing the image before pointing carefully at the screen.

“This measurement here,” she said calmly, “shows the developmental age of the fetus.”

Paige sighed dramatically.

“So?” she muttered.

Dr. Harris turned toward them.

“So this pregnancy is much further along than eight weeks.”

The room went silent.

David frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means,” Dr. Harris continued carefully, “that your wife became pregnant before your vasectomy procedure.”

David blinked.

“No,” he said immediately. “That’s impossible.”

The doctor remained composed.

“Actually, medically speaking, it is entirely possible. Based on the ultrasound measurements, Laura is approximately fourteen weeks pregnant.”

Fourteen weeks.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

I had suspected I was further along because of the exhaustion and nausea, but hearing the number out loud changed everything.

David stared at the screen as if it had personally betrayed him.

“That can’t be right,” he snapped.

Dr. Harris folded her hands professionally.

“The fetal measurements are very clear. Conception occurred well before your surgery.”

Paige’s expression changed first.

The confidence drained from her face so quickly it was almost frightening.

She looked at David.

“You told me she got pregnant after.”

David opened his mouth but nothing came out.

For the first time since all of this began, he looked uncertain.

“I… I thought she did,” he stammered.

Dr. Harris glanced at him sharply.

“A vasectomy does not work instantly,” she explained. “Patients are specifically instructed to return for follow-up testing because fertility may continue for weeks or even months afterward. In this case, however, the pregnancy predates the surgery entirely.”

Every cruel word David had thrown at me came rushing back all at once.

Cheater.

Liar.

Humiliating.

I sat frozen on the examination table while the truth hung in the air between us like shattered glass.

Paige slowly lowered her arms…………..
